Most people don’t think about emergency preparedness, especially when they’re at home. However, it is essential to ensure that you are prepared for any medical emergencies that can occur so that you know what to do, stay calm and hopefully save lives. Many tips are available to help ensure that you’re preparing yourself and others in case a problem arises.
CPR
If you don’t already know cardiopulmonary resuscitation, you should learn it immediately. CPR can keep a loved one breathing until help arrives to transport them to the hospital. However, if you’ve already learned CPR, and it’s been a few years, you should consider updating your certification. Chances are, you won’t need it, but what if you’re overwhelmed by the thought of losing a loved one that you forget the steps or do them incorrectly?
For example, what happens if your husband stops breathing and your children are at home? They’ll be upset and panicking, so you’ll have to calm them down. Plus, they’re probably too young to dial for help and tell the operator the situation, so you’ll have to do that, as well. Then, you’ll have to administer CPR, reposition your husband and everything else in the bargain. Understanding what to do and when could be the difference between losing your husband permanently and saving his life.
AED Certification
If you or someone you know has an abnormal heart rhythm, an Automated External Defibrillator could be the only thing between them (or you) and death. However, if you aren’t certified or don’t have one, there is nothing that can be done. Therefore, it may be best to ensure that you have access to one and know how to use it.
First Aid
It is important to learn first aid, but it’s also vital to ensure that you have a kit prepared and ready to go in any crisis. They should, at the very least, include bandages, adhesive bandages, sterile gauze, antiseptic and a space blanket.
Why They’re Necessary
When you’re at work or somewhere else, others may be able to help and emergency responders may arrive quicker. However, when you’re at home, possibly alone with a dying person, it could be all up to you. While this can be a scary thought, it is better to think about and prepare for, it now than to wait until it’s too late.
